Suky Best - teachers
You can include ArtisanCam in your teaching in a number of ways, from classroom activities guided by the classroom workshop video clips to research using timelapse, techniques, influences or questions sections or using the interactive online learning tools. Featured artists usually have seven sections and the table below will tell you what you should expect to see:
general
Suky Best is an animation artist based in London. The video clips were made with funding from Cumbria and Lancashire Education Online. Thanks also go to the National Media Museum in Bradford
and the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre in Lowther Castle, Cumbria.
The work of artist and animator, Suky Best can introduce or reinforce the following concepts: Through using the site, and being encouraged to discuss, reflect on contemporary illustration and by creating and modifying the work they produce, pupils will know, do or understand the following:
  • understand the importance of the drawing skills as used in animation [see 'timelapse' - 'techniques' - 'workshops' - 'illustration'].
  • identify techniques used in producing animations [eg. collage, freehand drawn, storyboarding].
  • use collage and drawing techniques to make animations for a picture book [see 'workshops' - 'illustration workshop'].
  • create a new stop frame animation [see 'workshops' - 'animation workshop'].
  • analyse their work and make comments about why some animations work better than others [see 'workshops' - 'animation workshop'].
  • realise that there are contemporary artists who create art as a living and who derive their income from commissions and residencies [passim].
  • understand the motivations behind the choice of art as a career ['questions'].
  • understand that an artist's relationship with their audience and commissioners of work and understand how these relationships can influence their work ['questions' - 'timelapse' - 'techniques'].
  • to review what they and others have done, say what they think and feel about it and what they might change.
  • to make comments about the work, showing understanding of why these materials were used. ['timelapse' - 'techniques' - 'questions']
You may find other ILOs equally or more applicable to your pupils' needs.

The Suky Best timelapse section shows the entire story of the development of a new animation based around birds of prey. Suky intially visited the Lakeland Bird of Prey centre in Cumbria to film with professional wildlife cameraman Lee Sutterby. She then returned to her studio in London to draw the 1500 plus frames of the animation and record and mix the sound. The sound was record at the Royal College of Art sound studios and mixed by xxxxxxxx. The final showing of the short film took place at Tullie House, Carlisle in front of an audience of year 5 pupils from local schools.
