Sarah Dyer - teachers
You can include ArtisanCam in your teaching in a number of ways, from classroom activities guided by the classroom workshop video clips to research using timelapse, techniques, influences or questions sections or using the interactive online learning tools. Featured artists usually have seven sections and the table below will tell you what you should expect to see:
general
Sarah Dyer is based in London. The video clips were made with funding from London Grid for Learning and the support of ZSL London Zoo
Thanks to the Illustration Cupboard Gallery in London for allowing us to film at Sarah's book signing.
The work of illustrator and children's author, Sarah Dyer can introduce or reinforce the following concepts: Through using the site, and being encouraged to discuss, reflect on contemporary illustration and by creating and modifying the work they produce, pupils will know, do or understand the following:
  • understand the importance of the drawing skills as used in illustration [see 'timelapse' - 'techniques' - 'workshops' - 'illustration'].
  • identify techniques used in producing illustrations [eg. collage, freehand drawn, storyboarding].
  • use collage and drawing techniques to make illustrations for a picture book [see 'workshops' - 'illustration workshop'].
  • create a new picture book for younger readers [see 'workshops' - 'illustration workshop'].
  • analyse their books and make comments about why some stories work better than others [see 'workshops' - 'illustration workshop'].
  • realise that there are contemporary artists who create art as a living and who derive their income from commissions and residencies [passim].
  • understand the motivations behind the choice of art as a career ['questions'].
  • understand that an artist's relationship with their publisher and the audience can influence their work ['questions' - 'timelapse' - 'techniques'].
  • to review what they and others have done, say what they think and feel about it and what they might change.
  • to make comments about the work, showing understanding of why these materials were used. ['timelapse' - 'techniques' - 'questions']
You may find other ILOs equally or more applicable to your pupils' needs.

classroom workshops
The illustration classroom workshop was led by artist Jane Porter working with a group of Yr 6 pupils. The session begins with a visit by members of London Zoo education outreach team and Roberta the Macaw. Pupils then draw from life and create simple stories involving a Macaw to produce individual collaged picture books. Jane uses acrylic paint as part of this workshop and old clothes are advised for this part of the process. The books are bound and stitched and advice is given for materials and techniques.
