The Umlando
timelapse section gives background information about the
Nelson Mandela comic book series produced by the artists
of Umlando Wezithombe, millions of copies of which were
published in South Africa and distributed to schools and
through national newspapers. The director of the company
Nic Buchanan and the main illustrator Pitshou Mamba are
featured and the section includes footage from the notorious
Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner

The Umlando techniques section shows the stages of production
of the Nelson Mandela comic book series. The other artists
featured in addition to Pitshou Mamba are Santa Buchanan,
researcher for Umlando, Pascal Nzoni who is seen inking
and Richie Orphan who uses Photoshop to colour the drawings.
The drawing they are working on is of Nelson Mandela burning
his passbook. The photograph of Nelson Mandela burning his
passbook comes from the Nelson Mandela Museum in South Africa's

The Umlando influences section was filmed at the Cartoon
Museum in London. Nic Buchanan, Santa Buchanan, and Richie
Orphan chose works from the collection to discuss and talk

classroom workshops |
The Umlando classroom workshop section shows how to use
Photoshop to produce a comic book image in nine video clips.
The artists worked with Year 10 pupils to take them through
the various stages. The pupils are using Photoshop version
5 and 6 but previous versions are also suitable but tools
and instructions may vary. The photography workshop uses the following materials, tools or software:
